Causes and clinical significance of increased methemoglobin

چکیده
The principal function of the protein hemoglobin contained in red blood cells is transport of oxygen in inspired air from lungs to tissue cells. Although normally present in only trace amounts, there are three species of hemoglobin that cannot transport oxygen. The three species, collectively called the dyshemoglobins because of their functional redundancy, are: carboxyhemoglobin, sulfhemoglobin and methemoglobin. The last of these is the subject of this article.

Antioxidant effect of different vitamins on methemoglobin production: An in vitro study
Nitrite intoxication occurs frequently in ruminants and equines. The most common treatment of this disorder is administration of 1% methylene blue, although the use of some antioxidant agents e.g. vitamins and complementary treatment may also be useful. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidative effects of some vitamins on methemoglobinemia induced by sodium nitrite. For t...
متن کاملDevelopment of methemoglobin-based biological dosimetry in gamma–irradiated mice
Background: A new biological dosimeter based on methemoglobin level was developed in this study. Materials and Methods: Methemoglobin level in erythrocytes from mice subjected to &gamma rays from a 60Co source was detected using the methemoglobin kit. The dose range was from 0.5 to 8 Gy and the dose rate was 0.5 Gy/min. Results: The results demonstrate that methemoglobin level increases with in...
متن کاملFructation Induces Hemin Degradation in Methemoglobin
Under prolonged diabetic conditions, HbA1c is produced from normal hemoglobin (HbA0) through a non-enzymatic glycosylation or glycation, a process which enhances the hemoglobin susceptibility to be auto-oxidized to methemoglobin (metHb). Here we are reporting that the non-enzymatic reaction between fructose and metHb (metHb fructation) induces significant changes in the gl...
متن کاملStudies of Methemoglobin Concentrations of Three Human Erythrocyte Genotypes (Hb AA, Hb AS, and Hb SS) in the Presence of Five Antimalarial Drugs
Background: Malaria remains the world’s most devastating human parasitic infection. Our goal was to assess the capacity of increasing concentrations of five antimalarial drugs (FansidarTM, HalfanTM, Quinine, CoartemTM and Chloroquine phosphate) to elicit the generation of methemoglobin in three human erythrocyte genotypes (Hb AA, Hb AS and Hb SS). Materials and Methods: Spectrophotometric metho...
متن کاملElectrochemical reduction of methemoglobin either directly or with flavin mononucleotide as a mediator.
Electrochemical reduction of methemoglobin on a platinum electrode is studied by means of thin layer spectroelectrochemistry. For methemoglobin alone in solution, direct reduction is very slow even for potentials close to those of the reduction of the solvent. The reduction of a methemoglobin-oxyhemoglobin mixture with an imposed potential causes the electrochemical reduction of oxygen, the con...
